After the partition of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in 1811, when part of the territories went to the Russian side, the Poles dreamed of independence. An armed confrontation with Russia begins, and Poland hopes for help from Napoleon's troops moving eastward. Against this backdrop, a Polish officer, Tadeusz, and Sophia, who resemble Romeo and Juliet, fall in love.
