After his mother's death, Henry proclaimed king of Navarre, and soon he marries Marguerite de Valois known as the "Queen Margot". This political marriage aims to reconcile the Catholic and Protestant parties that are in a bloody struggle for land and power. The wedding celebration lasts for a few days and ends with the massacre of Protestants - St. Bartholomew's night. Henry escapes, having converted to Catholicism, after which he remains a prisoner of the French court for almost 4 years. In February 1576, after escaping to the south, Henry returns to Protestantism. In people's memory Henry IV remained as "good King Henry".
