1941. Life of a student of the Leningrad Industrial Institute dramatically changes in one day. Ivan Gutchkov catches the eye Major Lobanov, the Head of the Intelligence Section of the Leningrad Military District. Several months later the Soviet GRU (Main Intelligence Directorate) receives report about the U.S. developing powerful nuclear munitions.

Soviet intelligence decides to recruit Ivan to an enriched uranium plant in Nevada. Not to generate doubts, they change Gutchkov’s appearance, name and biography. Ivan turns into a missing marine cadet Stanley Lieber and now is to marry Lieber’s bride Sheila. The girl shares his troubles and even decides to move to Nevada with him. Ivan gradually forgets about his own bride Lika he left in the Soviet Union, moreover, it is unknown whether she survived in the besieged Leningrad.

But his life turns out to be even more unpredictable. He and Sheila are arrested and deported to the Soviet Union. Now Guchkov has to go through all circles of hell to look for dear to him people.
