It is a screening of Tostoy’s play of the same name. Elizabeth wants to divorce with her husband Fedya, in spite of the fact that they have a son. She is still pretty young, but the husband is constantly missing somewhere and always drinks. She finds supporters in her mother and her childhood friend, Karenin, who has been in love with her from their childhood. She loves Karenin deep in herself as well. Fedya, the husband, falls in love with a Gypsy and promises to free Liza from him. But instead of singing the divorce papers, he fakes a suicide.
