In the third round of Group G of the World Cup qualifiers, Malta will face Lithuania at Ta' Qali National Stadium. The hosts have yet to earn any points in the qualifiers, while the visitors have one. The teams have met three times on the island. In 2006, the Baltic side secured a dominant 4–1 win in Paola at Tony Bezzina Stadium. Former Livorno striker Tomas Danilevičius scored twice in that match. Ten years later, the Knights got their revenge in a home friendly, 2–0. The sides also played during the 2018 World Cup qualifiers, drawing 1–1 in Ta' Qali.

During that stretch, Edgaras Jankauskas’s side won just twice on the road — against Latvia in a friendly cup semifinal (2–0) and Gibraltar in the Nations League play-outs (1–0). Over the past six years, their only draw away from home came in a 2023 friendly against Greece, 0–0.
