In Matchday 5 of Group E of the World Cup qualifiers at the Bursa Büyükşehir Belediye Stadium, Turkey will host Bulgaria. The Moon Stars welcome the Lions. The hosts sit second in the table with nine points, while the visitors are last and have yet to earn any points. In the first-round fixture, Turkey demolished their opponent in Sofia 6-1. Previously, the teams met three times in the 21st century. One of those matches took place in Istanbul in June 2015 and ended with a convincing 4-0 win for the red-and-whites, who scored three goals in seven minutes of the second half. Inter midfielder Hakan Çalhanoğlu scored two goals and provided two assists in the two previous matches against the Lions.

The hosts were crushed by Spain in Konya, 0-6, but comfortably defeated Georgia 4-1 in Kocaeli. Real Madrid midfielder Arda Güler contributed to four goal actions for his national team, while Hakan Çalhanoğlu provided four assists that led to goals. The loss to La Furia Roja was only the second home defeat for the Moon Stars since summer 2022. In March 2023, the team lost at home to Croatia in the Euro qualifiers, 0-2.
