In Matchday 9 of Group L of the European World Cup Qualifiers, Gibraltar will take on Montenegro at the Europa Point Stadium. The hosts are bottom of the table and have yet to earn a single point, while the visitors sit fourth with six. The teams met earlier in Nikšić during the first round, when the British overseas side unexpectedly opened the scoring in the 13th minute. However, a goal and an assist from 36-year-old forward Stevan Jovetić helped the Brave Falcons stage a comeback and secure a 3–1 victory. The two sides also faced each other in the previous World Cup qualifying campaign.

The hosts have already conceded twenty goals—only Liechtenstein, Moldova, and San Marino have worse defensive records in the European qualifiers. Gibraltar hosted the Czech Republic (0–4), Croatia (0–7), and the Faroe Islands, conceding the only goal in the middle of the second half. Scott Wiseman’s men have lost all eight of their matches this year.

Montenegro have yet to earn a single point or score a goal away from home in this group. The Brave Falcons lost on the road to the Czech Republic (2–0), Croatia (4–0), and the Faroe Islands (4–0). The Balkan side are on a run of nine consecutive away defeats, a streak that began in autumn 2023 after a 2–2 draw with Lithuania in the Euro qualifiers. Over the past three years, the national team’s only away victory came against Bulgaria (1–0).
