The hero of the four novellas is corridor boy Ted, who goes to work before the New Year. The man experiences various adventures: attending a witches' coven, narrowly escaping death at the hands of his jealous husband, escaping from the mischievous children of a criminal, and becoming a participant in a wager of eccentric personalities, all the while keeping his cool.
