Events take place in the nineteenth century, when Marian Brook loses her father, a Southern general, and moves to New York to live with her aunts. The heroine has to enter the lives of her rich neighbors and a ruthless railroad magnate whose wife is trying to get into high society. Marian will have to figure out the rules of the place for the sake of her future.
