Set in the realities of postwar Poland, the story of parents struggling to cope with their grief as they depart for their last journey with the body of their son is told on behalf of their grandson, Jan. Hanna and Jakub's son Wacław "Odrowąż" Szewczyk, a soldier in the Home Army, was shot by the Polish Department of Security in the fall of 1946. After a series of humiliations inflicted by the new government, which repeatedly desecrated the remains of their son, Hanna and Jakub decide to give him a dignified burial in Kalwaria Pacławska, 500 km from their home. The parents' journey through Poland, still mired in a postwar nightmare, becomes a metaphorical journey into the depths of the human soul and an attempt to reinterpret the concept of "humanity" in a world in which neighbors become sworn enemies and an unexpected ally may be a former enemy.
