The end of the 19th century, a poor Estonian village. The villagers, driven to despair by their harsh living conditions, sell their souls to Satan, who will bring to life a series of kratts, creatures made of improvised materials, to help them. The peasant girl Liina is already ready to go to the witch if only her lover, Hans, would look at her. And Hans himself gets a job as an overseer at the manor so that he can see the master's daughter more often.
