The movie is set in 1989 when four crew members set sail on the trimaran Rose Noelle from Picton in New Zealand. They are on their way to Tonga, but suddenly, a large wave capsizes their boat. The heroes drift on the water for one hundred and nineteen days until they eventually reach Great Barrier Island.
