Charles Ryder wants to become an artist but is studying history in Oxford, where fate brings him to the alcohol-prone homosexual and aristocrat Sebastian Flyte. Soon he visits the Brideshead family estate, where he meets the religious Lady Marchmain and falls in love with the sister of his friend, Julia. It is a story of a difficult live-long relationship that can neither accept nor let go.
