He was born in Scotland on December 23, 1944, as a result of a mystical ritual. He is brought up in America on a military base. Hellboy later joined the secret Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense, set up to protect the country from various mystical and otherworldly beings and forces.
On the outside, Hellboy combines traditional ideas about demons. He has red skin, large bent horns, and a long naked tail. He has a well-developed musculature of a strong man, a black beard, and sideburns. His distinctive feature is the stone right hand, which feels no pain and is not susceptible to fire.
