In the 21st century, the club is playing in the decisive qualifying round of the premier European competition for the eighth time. AEK previously successfully navigated this stage against APOEL, Grasshopper, Hearts, and Fehérvár, while it was eliminated by Sevilla, CSKA, and Antwerp.

Levski is playing in the Champions League qualifiers for the first time since the 2009/10 season, when it was eliminated by Debrecen at this same stage. The Bulgarian club's only appearance in the tournament's group stage came in the 2006/07 season after defeating Italian side Chievo 2-0 on aggregate, following a 2-2 draw in the second leg. At the same time, the Sofia side has never won a European away match in Greece. The visitors will need to show maximum discipline to change this record and fight for a place in the main tournament.
