Allianz Stadium will host the first-round match of the Europa League league phase: Juventus — NEC. The Turin club finished sixth in the Italian league, two points short of the Champions League spots. The hosts are appearing in the fall stage of the tournament for the first time since the 2010/11 season. The visitors won bronze medals in the domestic league. The Dutch side opened its European campaign in the Champions League qualifiers, defeating Olympiacos in extra time but then losing to Bodø/Glimt.

Juventus made its tournament debut in 1971 and has suffered only four defeats in sixty-four home matches, keeping clean sheets in thirty-four of them. The Turin side has hosted Dutch clubs three times: in the 1974/75 season, the hosts defeated Ajax and lost to Twente, while in the 2009/10 campaign they drew with the Amsterdam side. The Italian club has gone unbeaten in the competition for sixteen matches, dating back to 1999. It will be important for the hosts to take control of the game from the opening minutes and defend reliably.

NEC played in the main stage of the tournament only once, in the 2008/09 campaign, when it made it through the group stage and reached the Round of 32. Throughout its history in European competitions, the Dutch club has played ten away matches, winning two — against Norway’s Brann in the 1983/84 Cup Winners’ Cup and Spartak in the 2008/09 UEFA Cup. However, in six of those ten matches, the Nijmegen side failed to score a single goal. The visitors will need to remain organized in defense and stay highly focused near their own goal.
