Stadio Olimpico in Rome will host a first-round Division A match of the UEFA Nations League: Italy vs Belgium. The two sides have previously met twice on Italian soil in this competition. In 2021 in Turin, the hosts won 2-1. In the last edition of the competition, the teams drew 2-2 in the capital. Belgium's only away win against this opponent dates back to 1999, when a friendly at Via del Mare ended 3-1.

In the previous Nations League cycle, the Italian national team finished second in its group, then lost to Germany in the quarterfinals 1-2 and 3-3. In the spring, in the semifinal of the World Cup qualification play-offs, it beat Northern Ireland 2-0, but lost the decisive match to Bosnia and Herzegovina after a 1-1 draw and a 1-4 penalty shootout. In June, the Italian side played two away friendlies, winning both 1-0 without conceding, against Luxembourg and Greece.
