Shakhtar Donetsk approaches this round in excellent form, enjoying a long unbeaten run in all competitions and recording four consecutive convincing clean-sheet victories domestically, as well as opening its European competition league-phase campaign with a 1-1 away draw against PSV. The Miners rely on possession, high speed in transitions into attack, and solid defensive lines. It is extremely important for the Ukrainian club to take the initiative from the opening minutes and dictate the terms on the pitch.

AEK comes into the match in similarly excellent form, having put together a series of impressive victories, including a crushing 8-1 triumph in a cup match, and beginning its Champions League league-phase campaign with a narrow 1-0 victory over LASK. The Greek side stands out for its high midfield density and ability to make effective use of set pieces. The Athens club will look to deny its opponent space and apply intense pressure on the Donetsk side's goal.

The history of the head-to-head meetings between these opponents recalls a friendly played last July, which ended in a convincing 5-0 victory for the Greek club. The upcoming Champions League encounter will be an excellent opportunity for Shakhtar players to get revenge on the international stage.
