AZ Alkmaar opened the current campaign with a 0-1 away defeat to English side Sunderland. At the same time, the team has shown excellent stability on home turf and has not lost at home in the Europa League for eighteen consecutive matches. This run has lasted since the 2016/17 season, following a 1-4 defeat to Lyon. The hosts have previously welcomed Israeli clubs twice in the group stage: in 2013, it defeated Maccabi Haifa 2-0, while three years later it lost to Maccabi Tel Aviv, 1-2.

Hapoel Be'er Sheva drew 0-0 with Dinamo Zagreb in the first round at a neutral venue in Bucharest. The Israeli club has experienced serious difficulties in away matches on the international stage, losing thirteen of its twenty-one away games in the UEFA Cup and Europa League. The team has already traveled to the Netherlands in the 2019/20 qualifying campaign, losing to Feyenoord 0-3. In the 1997/98 Cup Winners' Cup, the visitors also suffered a heavy 0-10 defeat to Roda.
