Raskolnikov tries to figure out to what type of people he belongs – to "a despicable creature" which, after committing a wrong deed torments itself by pangs of conscience, or to those who "have the right" - people who can sway the destinies and, after lowdown acts, sleep like babies. Rodion is a poor student who kills an old lady, the moneylender. But the hell of his own soul, in which he eventually falls, appears to be worse than any prison.
