The focus is on a twelve-year-old boy who is going through his father and mother's divorce, so at some point, he develops a friendship with a drinking and now-aged neighbor who has survived the war. The new buddy is a gambler and uses the services of prostitutes. The unsociable and not entirely positive man becomes a mentor for the young hero.
