A talented detective named Anatoly Topol is charged with the investigation of a murder of State Duma deputy and his family. During the investigation, he gets the information about an unusual artificial matter named red mercury. It can become a more effective substitute of plutonium and be used in creation of a weapon with a colossal destructive power. High-positioned people take part in the case, but Anatoly is determined to punish the guilty ones.
