In June and July 1944, there were active fights between the Canadian regiment and the Hitlerites in France. The latter captured almost all of Europe, but the city of Caen was heavily fought for. It was the center of an important transport hub and an opportunity for Allied troops to break through. The Nazi troops did not want to give up what they had won.
