Yermolay Voyevodin, the father of five children, lives in an old Siberian village. His elder son, Ignat went to Moscow to work in a circus demonstrating his strength. After hearing from his brother how great his life is, Maksim also goes to Moscow and starts working at construction site. Feeling lonely he dreams of returning to the village, but his pride stops him. The middle son, Stepan ends up in jail after getting into a fight. Three months before his release he escapes and returns to the village to see his family and gain strength to serve his sentence. Yermolay is left with his favourite son Vasily and mute daughter Vera. He dreams that one day all their sons will gather under the roof of their home, but will it ever come true?
