Jack Gramm, a college professor, works with a federal bureau for which he compiles psychological portraits of criminals. At one point, the professor helps send a serial maniac to prison. Several hours are left before the murderer is executed, and Gramm receives a call from a stranger who informs him that the hero has only eighty-eight minutes to live.
