The creators of the 2018 documentary film Naive Art: When One Looks, One Finds It! take viewers on a journey across France. The film questions the boundaries and definitions of naïve art. It introduces audiences to Savin Fopen, head curator of Art Brut at LAM; collector Matthieu Morin; and gallery owner Christian Berst. Each of them offers their own interpretation of this art form, which is often difficult to define.

Naïve-style paintings often resemble illustrations from children’s books or folk ornaments, yet behind this apparent simplicity lies a deep emotional layer and a highly original vision of the world. Artists working in this style create intuitively, guided not by the rules of perspective or anatomy, but by their own perception of reality. The filmmakers show how art is constantly evolving and renewing itself.

The project Naive Art: When One Looks, One Finds It! was produced by the French documentary studio Museum. The film was produced by Charles Lavilanie, who previously worked on projects such as Portrait of an Artist, My Little Museum, and Living Art. Visual direction was handled by Jérôme Kempa, who has more than 20 documentary films in his portfolio, including Lake Grave Under Occupation and Seed of Madness, among others.

The documentary features Savin Fopen, chief curator of the Art Brut collection at the LaM Museum of Modern Art, who has curated numerous exhibitions, including Hypnos, Images and the Unconscious in Europe in Lille. She is joined by Christian Berst, owner of the Art Brut gallery, and collector Matthieu Morin.
