Japanese Gardens
Japanese Gardens
The informational film Japanese Gardens 2022 offers an introduction to the art of Japanese garden design. This approach to landscape design originated in Japan, has been refined over more than a thousand years, and continues to evolve today. The development of this art began in the 6th century CE and is divided into distinct periods.
The first period dates from the 6th to the 8th century. It is called the Nara period—after the capital of Japan at that time. During this period, the art drew heavily on Chinese culture. The Heian period lasted from the 9th to the 12th century. The Moribana period began in the 19th and 20th centuries, with a noticeable influence from Western art. While the first gardens were built by Buddhist monarchs and pilgrims, modern designs are more abstract.
According to the philosophy introduced in the film Japanese Gardens, a Japanese garden should showcase the perfection of earthly nature and even model the universe. Its plant life consists of trees and shrubs, moss, grasses, and flowers. Elements of bamboo and grasses are also welcome. Tea houses, bridges, gazebos, and lanterns can be used as non-natural features.
The compositional elements are arranged in accordance with the topography of the site. The placement of all elements is based on the laws of nature, which are subsequently translated into the laws of harmony. The landscape is influenced by aesthetic preferences. Among the most famous examples is the cycle of the Three Gardens of Japan: Kenroku-en, Koraku-en, and Karaku-en. Another famous series is the Temple Gardens, which include Ryoan-ji, Tofuku-ji, Saiho-ji, and Daito-ji. Since the 20th century, Japanese gardens have gained popularity outside of Japan.
