The Man Who Destroyed the Machine
The Man Who Destroyed the Machine
The MEGOGO documentary The Man Who Destroyed the Machine tells the story of legendary mixed martial arts fighter Igor Vovchanchyn. The Ukrainian is regarded by experts as one of the greatest knockout artists in MMA history and the toughest fighter of the 1990s.
The story takes us back to the legendary superfight that took place in 1999. In the ring in Yokohama, the two best heavyweight mixed martial artists in the world at the time faced off: Ukraine's Igor Vovchanchyn and the still-undefeated American monster Mark Kerr. The fight was meant to determine the king of MMA. The bout ended with a spectacular knockout by the Ukrainian, leaving Kerr nearly unconscious. Later, the organizers ruled the contest a no-contest and stripped Vovchanchyn of his victory. It was determined that Igor had been "destroying" the American superstar with illegal strikes, something the referee apparently failed to notice.
A quarter of a century later, the controversial story has been brought to the big screen in Hollywood. This fall, the biographical sports drama The Smashing Machine will be released in Ukrainian theaters, telling the personal tragedy of painkiller-addicted Mark Kerr. "The Machine" is portrayed by Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, while Vovchanchyn is played by three-time undisputed world boxing champion Oleksandr Usyk.
A quarter of a century after those events, we had the exclusive opportunity to sit down with Igor Vovchanchyn, known as the "Giant Killer." That candid conversation became the foundation of The Man Who Destroyed the Machine. The documentary tells the story of an ordinary young man from a small town near Kharkiv who, through his natural courage, relentless dedication, and unwavering commitment, climbed to the very top of the MMA world. He became an international superstar admired in Brazil, Japan, and the United States, yet remains unfairly underappreciated in his native Ukraine.
