Palme: The Murder Investigation
Palme: The Murder Investigation
Palme, träsket och mordrättegångarna (2018) is a documentary series directed by Mikael Ryttkäi Hylin. The project investigates one of the most notorious and mysterious crimes of the 20th century — the assassination of Swedish Prime Minister Olof Palme. Viewers are taken into the dark corners of Stockholm’s criminal underworld and introduced to the numerous investigative mistakes that shaped the case over the years.
The documentary is based on unique source materials and archival evidence that the filmmaker painstakingly collected over a period of fifteen years. The story begins with the tragic events of February 28, 1986, when the prime minister was shot dead on Stockholm’s Sveavägen street. The series presents eyewitness accounts and the reactions of Palme’s closest associates before turning its focus to Christer Pettersson, the man who became the central figure in the police investigation. Although he was formally charged with the crime, he was ultimately acquitted.
Director and screenwriter Mikael Ryttkäi Hylin conducted extensive research, comparing archival footage, court transcripts, and interviews with people directly connected to the case. As a result, Palme, träsket och mordrättegångarna offers a detailed examination of procedural errors and alleged misconduct during the investigation, placing particular emphasis on factual evidence and legal complexities. Its central themes include the pursuit of truth and justice, the functioning of the legal system, and the consequences of judicial mistakes.
