After the collapse of the Ottoman Empire, the political situation in Georgia was deplorable. It was divided into small principalities, fighting among themselves. In order to save the country and strengthen the position of Georgia, the ruling authorities decided to sign the Treaty of Georgievsk, and in 1783 Georgia came under the auspices of the Russian Empire.
