Refusing to follow the exact development of the plot and the novel characteristics of the actors, Pudovkin, along with the screenwriter Nathan Zarchi reinterpreted Gorky's material, translated it into the language of cinema, keeping revolutionary spirit and the main theme of a literary source. The film differs with a harmonious unity of all its components: each frame, episode, each image are imbued with a common idea running through. The film revealed the features of Pudovkin's creativity: variety and purposefulness of expressive means (editing, camera angles, details), rigor and lapidary style. The director captures life and images of people on the screen, creating subtle psychological characteristics.
