Atletico de Madrid

The team was founded by three Basque students on April 26, 1903, under the name Athletic Club Sucursal de Madrid. At first, the Madrid team were a preparation ground for young athletes for Athletic Bilbao. In 1904, former Real Madrid players joined the team. The team began playing in white and blue colors, but in 1911, Athletic acquired their current colors of red and white.

Some believe that the change of team colors was due to the fact that white and red stripes were the cheapest material at that time because mattresses were sewn of the same fabric. Actually, that is where the nickname of the team —The Mattress Makers, which is quite common today, comes from. There is also another version. According to this theory, team athletic shirts for Atlético Madrid and Bilbao Athletic were bought in England, in Blackburn Rovers. Once a team representative came to buy new wear but could not find any and had to buy Southampton strips in red and white colors.

The team were playing their first games at the stadium, located in the eastern, working-class part of the city. In 1921, Atlético Madrid became fully independent from their Basque founder. The company that owned the team's shares built the sports stadium, Estadio Metropolitano de Madrid, which had a capacity of 35,800 spectators. The stadium was used until 1966, after which the team moved to a new arena, the Vicente Calderón Stadium. The new club arena since 2017 was the Wanda Metropolitano stadium, with a capacity of 68,456.

During the 1920s, the team won the Campeonato Regional Centro and were a finalist in the Copa del Rey in 1921. Building on team achievements and stability, Atlético were included in the first La Liga draw in 1928. However, after two seasons, the team were relegated to the Segunda División. In 1934, they managed to return to the elite, but two years later, the team were relegated again.

Atlético Madrid and Real Madrid are completely different teams in almost every aspect. While the Santiago Bernabéu rises in one of the wealthiest and most prestigious neighborhoods of Madrid, the Vicente Calderon is located in a working-class neighborhood. Accordingly, the teams received the support of people from opposite parts of the city, with different social statuses and perspectives on life.

In addition to their soccer successes, Atlético are one of Spain's record holders in tickets sold and advertising revenue. In the 2013-14 season, Winning La Liga was the tenth in the club's history, which allowed them to place a gold star above the logo since the 2014-15 season.
