Born on February 12, 1983, in Jakarta, Indonesia, under the real name Uwais Qorny, he is an Indonesian actor and producer.

Since the age of ten, he began practicing Indonesia's national martial art, Pencak Silat. In 2003, he took third place in the city-wide tournament, and two years later became the champion of Indonesia in Pencak Silat. In the same year, as part of the Pencak Silat team, he visited the United Kingdom, Russia, and Azerbaijan, where the popularization of this martial art began. In 2007-2008, he visited Cambodia and France for the same purpose.

In 2007, Uwais met director Gareth Evans, who was working on a documentary about Pencak Silat at the time, and took part in the filming of this film. And in 2008, he starred in Evans' first feature film, the action film "Merantau," which widely featured elements of the Pencak Silat style "Silat Harimau" ("Tiger style Silat").
