In the UEFA Europa League Round of 16, the first leg between Ajax and Eintracht will take place at Johan Cruyff Arena in Amsterdam. The hosts struggled in the previous round but eliminated Royale Union despite a comfortable away win (2-0, 1-2, extra time). The visitors finished in the top five of their group stage and skipped the Round of 32. The two teams have never met in official competitions. Eintracht secured away victories over Beşiktaş (3-1) and Midtjylland (2-1) in the group stage but lost to Lyon (2-3) and Roma (0-2). The Eagles have reached this stage in eight seasons, failing to advance only twice. In the 1980/81 tournament, as the reigning cupholders, the Hessen club was knocked out by Sochaux (4-2, 0-2). In the 2019/20 Europa League, they were eliminated by Basel (0-3, 0-1). However, two years later, the German side not only cleared this hurdle but went on to win the tournament.
