Their only encounter came eight years ago in the friendly International Champions Cup in the United States. Back then, at the Citrus Bowl in Orlando, Spurs ran out 4–2 winners despite conceding in just the sixth minute. The teams traded two goals apiece before half-time, but early in the second half former PSG goalkeeper Kevin Trapp saw red. In the closing stages, the Londoners struck twice to seal the win.

The Parisians have only fought for this trophy once before — in 1996 — when, as Cup Winners’ Cup champions, they lost twice to Juventus: 1–6 at home in the Parc des Princes and 1–3 in Palermo. Former PSG midfielder Raí Souza scored both goals for his side in that tie. That remains the only Super Cup appearance for a French club. This season, Luis Enrique’s men are chasing silverware in their fifth competition within four months, having already lifted the Ligue 1 title, the French Cup, and the Champions League, but falling short in the FIFA Club World Cup final.

Tottenham is making its Super Cup debut. English clubs have contested the trophy 20 times — second only to Spanish sides, who have done so 32 times. The roll call of past English participants includes Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester United, Nottingham Forest, Aston Villa, Arsenal, and Manchester City. Spurs become the eighth Premier League representative in the tournament — a new record for a single national league, surpassing Serie A and La Liga, both with seven.
