Iceland — Azerbaijan
Iceland — Azerbaijan
Kick-off on 05.09.25, at 21:45.
In the opening round of Group D of the European World Cup qualifying campaign, Iceland and Azerbaijan will face off at Laugardalsvöllur Stadium in Reykjavik. Seventeen years ago, the opponents played their only match on this same field. Back then, the teams drew in a friendly, exchanging goals early in the second half, 1-1. In June, both sides took part in warm-up matches. The Vikings defeated Scotland in Glasgow, 3-1, but then lost to Northern Ireland in Belfast despite playing with a man advantage from the 57th minute, 0-1. The Milli drew with Latvia in Riga, 0-0, and lost in Baku to Hungary, who attempted twenty-five shots before the final whistle, 1-2. The MEGOGO media service will broadcast the Iceland — Azerbaijan match online on 05.09.2025.
The hosts have earned just two victories in their last nine matches. At home, the Vikings last won in September of last year, when they defeated Montenegro in the Nations League, 2-0. Since 2021, the islanders have failed to score at home only against Portugal in the Euro qualifiers, 0-1. In four of their previous five home matches, the team has scored at least twice. Azerbaijan has not won away from home since October 2023, when they defeated Estonia, 2-0, in Euro qualifying. In their last twelve matches, the Milli have suffered nine defeats and failed to score in six of those, including against Haiti, 0-3. The squad list includes defender Anton Krivotsyuk, of Ukrainian origin, who was born in Kyiv. At the youth level, he played for Zirka in the capital and within the FC Mariupol system. Also called up was Anatoliy Nuriyev, a product of Uzhhorod’s Hoverla and a former Minai forward.
