In the fifth round of the Ukrainian championship, Metalist 1925 and Shakhtar will face off at the Central Stadium in Zhytomyr. The opponents met twice in 2023 in matches nominally hosted by the Kharkiv side. Back in March, the Yellow-and-Blues suffered a crushing defeat in Lviv, 0-7. Five months later, the Miners won again, but with a minimal advantage at the Levyi Bereh Arena, 2-1. Mladen Bartulović’s men have claimed two consecutive victories with a combined score of 6-1. The Orange-and-Blacks have dropped points only once at the start of the season, in a 3-3 draw with Karpaty Lviv.

Five players of the Kharkiv squad recorded two goal contributions each in August. This year, the Yellow-and-Blues have lost just once in nominal home games — in May, when they faced Epicentr in the First League, 1-3. Central midfielder Samuel Obinay has gone on loan until the end of the season to Czech side Jablonec. The deal includes a buyout option.

Shakhtar sits second in the standings. Yehor Konoplia and Pedrinho were involved in three goal-scoring moves in the August matches. The Miners conceded all three of their goals in a single match against Karpaty. The Donetsk club was interested in signing İstanbul Başakşehir winger Ahmed Kutucu, but the Turkish side expected to receive at least €6 million for the transfer, so the parties could not reach an agreement. Metalist’s first vice president, Yevhen Krasnikov, repeatedly blocked the transfers of Hennadii Synchuk and Kyrylo Dehtiar to the Orange-and-Blacks.
