In Round 8 of Group I in the European qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup, Estonia will host Moldova at the A. Le Coq Arena in Tallinn. The teams previously met in March 2025 in Chișinău during the first leg, with Estonia coming out on top in a 3–2 win. In that match, Moldova’s Tricolors received a red card as early as the 5th minute, and both teams had a player sent off at the start of the second half. In the Baltic region, the teams had only faced each other in friendlies. In 2002 and 2008, Estonia won 1–0 at home in these matches.

The hosts have only managed to earn points in the current qualifying cycle in their previous encounter with Moldova. The national team lost twice to Israel, 1–2 and 1–3, and also suffered defeats against Italy, 0–5, and Norway, 0–1. Midfielder Matthias Käit from Tartu scored twice in the qualifiers. Over the past three years, Estonia has recorded only one home win in official matches — a 3–1 victory over Azerbaijan in last autumn’s UEFA Nations League.

Moldova has yet to earn any points in Group I. The Tricolors lost to Norway 0–5 and 1–11, to Italy 0–2, and to Israel 0–4, conceding a total of 25 goals. Only San Marino has a weaker defense in this qualifying cycle. Since October 2022, the national team has claimed a single away victory — a 1–0 win over Andorra in the UEFA Nations League. In September 2025, former Petrocub and Zimbru coach Lilian Popescu took over as head coach.
