In the third round of the UEFA Champions League group stage, Arsenal will host Atlético Madrid at London’s Emirates Stadium. The hosts have a perfect start to the group stage, while the visitors have three points. The teams have met before — in the 2017–18 Europa League semi-final. In that tie, they exchanged goals in the second half in London, with Atlético reduced to ten men as early as the 10th minute. The match ended 1–1: the Gunners couldn’t capitalize on their numerical advantage despite nearly 30 shots on goal. Arsenal, along with Inter Milan, remains one of only two teams yet to concede in the group stage.

This season, Arsenal have failed to score at home in the Champions League only once — against PSG in last season’s semi-final, 0–1.

Atlético lost 2–3 to Liverpool at Anfield in the first round, conceding twice by the sixth minute but managing to equalize before conceding a stoppage-time winner. At the end of September, the Madrid side bounced back with a 5–1 home thrashing of Eintracht Frankfurt, scoring three goals before halftime. Argentine forward Julián Álvarez contributed to three of Atlético’s goals. Currently, only Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund have scored more goals than Atlético in the group stage so far.
