In Matchday 9 of Group H of the European World Cup Qualifiers, Cyprus will face Austria at the Alphamega Stadium. The hosts have collected eight points and sit fourth in the standings, while the visitors lead the group with fifteen. In the first-round encounter in Linz, a penalty decided the outcome in favor of Ralf Rangnick’s side, 1–0. The teams have previously met four times in the Middle East. Austria claimed away wins in 1969 and 1984, both by a 2–1 scoreline, during World Cup qualification campaigns. Later, in the late 1990s, Cyprus suffered a heavy 0–3 defeat at the Antonis Papadopoulos Stadium in Larnaca during the European Championship qualifiers. In 2005, on the same pitch, the sides met again in a friendly — the hosts equalized in the 90th minute and went on to win the penalty shootout 5–4.
