The draw for the European play-offs for the 2026 World Cup will take place at the FIFA House in Zurich and will determine the mini-tournament pairings. Teams that finished second in their qualifying groups will advance to the play-offs. The participants were divided into four pots: Pot 1 includes Italy, Turkey, Ukraine, and Denmark; Pot 2 — Wales, Czech Republic, Poland, and Slovakia; Pot 3 — Ireland, Kosovo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Albania; and Pot 4 — Romania, North Macedonia, Northern Ireland, and Sweden.

After the pairings are determined, teams from Pot 1 will face opponents from Pot 4, and teams from Pot 2 will meet representatives from Pot 3. The winners of the semi-final duels will play in the final play-off matches, where direct World Cup spots will be decided. The European qualifiers will determine the last four participants who earned their chance based on the Nations League results.

Some teams had a chance to qualify directly. North Macedonia contested for second place in Group J until the last round but lost to Wales, 1-7. Romania fell four points short of the play-offs, and Northern Ireland three points. Sweden was the luckiest: the blue-and-yellow team had a weak qualification, not winning a single match and earning only two points in Group B. Only seven European teams finished the qualifiers with fewer points.
