Nigeria entered qualification for the 2026 World Cup with a pronounced status as group favorite. However, Eric Chelle’s team went through the campaign in a very uneven manner, dropping a significant number of points over the distance and only in the final round managing to move ahead of Benin to finish second in the group. In the subsequent stage, though, the side performed very poorly and failed to compete for a place at the World Cup. This scenario highlights the nature of the Nigerian national team: it is capable of switching on maximum focus in key moments, but over a long-term period, it lacks discipline.
