In the final of the European World Cup qualification playoffs, Kosovo will face Turkey at Fadil Vokrri Stadium. The opponents have previously met twice on the Balkan Peninsula: in a 2014 friendly, the visitors secured a dominant 6-1 victory, and during the 2018 World Cup qualifiers, the Turkish side once again came out on top with a 4-1 win.

The upcoming match will be decisive in the battle for a place in the final stage of the tournament, which both teams are aiming to reach after successfully overcoming the semifinal playoff round.

Kosovo finished second in Group B during the main qualifying stage, collecting eleven points. During the campaign, the team defeated Sweden twice, earned four points against Slovenia, and also lost to Switzerland. In the playoff semifinal, Franco Foda’s side completed a comeback in Bratislava, defeating Slovakia 4-3. Hoffenheim forward Fisnik Asllani scored a hat trick in that match, while Fortuna Düsseldorf striker Florent Muslija recorded three goal contributions.

Turkey finished second in Group E with thirteen points. In the qualifying round, the Turkish team lost to Spain but defeated both Georgia and Bulgaria twice. In the playoff semifinal, Vincenzo Montella’s side edged Romania 1-0. Inter midfielder Hakan Çalhanoğlu and Real Madrid player Arda Güler have each recorded five goal contributions in the current cycle. Historically, Turkey has reached the final stages of the World Cup only twice — in 1954 and 2002.
