The Varteks Stadium in Varaždin will host the international friendly match between Croatia and Slovenia. In the past, the teams played three friendly matches against each other, drawing twice, while the Croatian footballers celebrated victory once. In addition, the sides met eight times during qualification campaigns for the FIFA World Cup and the UEFA European Championship, where the Croatian national team earned five victories, while Slovenia came out on top only once, during the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in Ljubljana.

Croatia played two friendly matches in the spring, defeating Colombia before suffering a loss to Brazil. That defeat ended an impressive nine-match unbeaten run for Zlatko Dalić’s side, during which the team demonstrated excellent attacking form. On home soil, the Croatian national team has been exceptionally strong and has not lost since November 2023, when it was beaten by Türkiye. In its last four home fixtures, the side delighted supporters with highly efficient attacking play, scoring fifteen goals, and it now hopes to extend this successful streak.

Slovenia ended a lengthy seven-match winless streak in March by defeating Montenegro in a friendly encounter. The beginning of the year brought changes to the coaching staff, as Boštjan Cesar took charge of the national team in January. He is the record holder for the most appearances for Slovenia. The first match under the new head coach ended in a narrow defeat to Hungary. The team is currently undergoing a rebuilding process and will try to improve its attacking play in order to put up strong resistance against a powerful opponent.
