Signal Iduna Park will host the first-round match of the Champions League league phase: Borussia Dortmund — Villarreal. Dortmund will look to use home-field advantage and strong support from the stands to launch aggressive attacks from the start. The Spanish side is building its tactical approach around an organized defense and systematic coverage of all open spaces. The upcoming match will pit two systems against each other, with the hosts’ high-intensity attack facing the visitors’ deep defensive block.

Borussia Dortmund, under Niko Kovač, heads into its European campaign after playing its first official matches on the domestic stage. In the German championship and national cup, the team has demonstrated strong discipline when defending its goal and has worked effectively in transition phases. The players need to maintain concentration during prolonged positional attacks, minimize mistakes around the halfway line, and make good use of the chances they create near the opponent’s penalty area. Villarreal, under Iñigo Pérez, heads into the away match after a difficult start to the Spanish league season. The team will have to withstand significant pressure from the opponent at its home stadium and manage its energy properly when playing without the ball. The visitors need to stay compact between the defensive lines, reduce their error rate in transition, and defend reliably against the opponent’s set-piece combinations.
