Podgorica City Stadium will host a first-round match of UEFA Nations League Division C: Montenegro — Cyprus. The two sides previously met in this same tournament in the 2020/21 season. On that occasion, the Montenegrin national team secured a convincing 4-0 win on home soil. Forward Stevan Jovetić scored a goal and provided two assists in that game. The teams also played in the same group in the 2010 World Cup qualifying, drawing in Podgorica. The Montenegrin players have not won an official home match in a year and a half — since their 1-0 success against the Faroe Islands.

In the previous Nations League campaign, the Montenegro national team finished last in their Division B group. After five consecutive defeats, the team beat Turkey 3-1 in Nikšić in the final round. This year, under head coach Mirko Vučinić, the Montenegrin side has played four friendlies: beating Andorra 2-0 and Bulgaria 1-0, drawing with Slovakia 2-2, and losing to Slovenia 2-3. At home, Montenegro has scored two goals in five of their previous six matches. The Cyprus national team finished third in their Division C group in the previous Nations League cycle. The team managed to pick up points only against Lithuania, beating them 2-1 and 1-0. Since November, the Cypriot side, under head coach Akis Mantzios, has played exclusively friendly matches. At home, the Cypriots lost to Estonia and Belarus but got past Moldova, 3-2. In June away friendlies, Cyprus drew with Slovenia and beat Liechtenstein 2-0. Since November 2019, the Cyprus national team has recorded only two wins in official away matches.
