Salzburg opened the league phase with a 1-0 away victory over Bulgarian side Levski in Sofia. In its previous twenty-two home Europa League matches, the Austrian side has suffered just three defeats: against Villarreal, 0-2, Porto, 0-1, and Ferencváros, 2-3. During this stretch, the hosts scored at least two goals in fourteen matches. Overall, the Austrian team has played eight home matches against Italian clubs in this tournament, losing to Inter, Udinese, and Parma, but defeating Lazio, Napoli, and Roma.

Milan opened the tournament with a 0-2 home defeat to Portuguese side Benfica. At the same time, the Milan club's away scoring streak in the Europa League has now reached fifteen consecutive matches. This streak dates back to the 2017/18 season, following a goalless draw with Greek side AEK in Athens. In the group stage of that same campaign, the Italian team traveled to Austria and routed Austria Vienna 5-1, while in the early years of the European Cup, it also played against local side Rapid in the country.
