A failed writer, Clifford Irving, tries to publish his new work in a major publishing house, but he doesn't succeed. Soon, the hero manages to sell a fake biography of Howard Hughes to one of the leading companies, which causes a real furor in the media in the early seventies. The film is shown in sign language.
