OPSEC (Operational Security). What is operational security and how can it be applied in the military?
An educational video on what OPSEC (Operational Security) is. In this video, we explain what operational security is, how information can become a weapon, and why it is important to refrain from sharing information about yourself and your unit on social media.
In today’s world, information is a weapon as powerful as any other. If we take care to protect information according to OPSEC principles, we will not give our enemies an advantage. Instead, we will stay one step ahead of the enemy, ensuring the success and security of our operations.
The OPSEC algorithm consists of five steps:
1. Identify information important to the enemy about our intentions, capabilities, and actions;
2. Analyze threats, i.e. the enemy, based on intelligence and open data;
3. Analyze the vulnerability of the operation. Vulnerability is when the enemy can collect important information, analyze it, and use it to gain an advantage.
4. Assess risks. This means, based on the analysis of vulnerabilities, to identify possible countermeasures given the importance of the operation;
5. Implement countermeasures based on the risk assessment.
It is important to remember that OPSEC is not just a checklist with a list of steps, it is a way of thinking. Any action — online or offline — can either protect or disclose important or sensitive information.
The training video will be of interest to military personnel and anyone who works with sensitive and confidential information.
The video was created by the team of the Military Leadership YouTube channel.
