The title has a double meaning: the Latin verba translates as «words», «speech», «text», «song», and the Ukrainian «verba» is a tree from which Mavka emerges and to which she returns.
This play on words reveals the symbolic space of Lesya Ukrainka’s poetic heritage.
At the center of the story is the love between Mavka and Lukash.
It transports the viewer into the depths of the elements, where the search for truth requires the greatest sacrifice — the price of one’s own life.
The production combines the multi-layered nature of the original work with a new stage interpretation, where word and image merge into a single artistic space.
The performance received the Taras Shevchenko National Prize of Ukraine (2021), won the Kyiv Pectoral (2019) in the nominations for Best Set Design and Best Musical Concept, and was also included in the longlist of the GRA Festival Award (2020).
